SungJong Yoon and his wife Eunyoung Kim came to U.S. from Korea to be equipped at Covenant Seminary to become an ordained missionary. SungJong graduated from Covenant with an M.Div in 2009. They have a daughter Karis Yoon (2009/07/05). They are going to Tokyo by the end of 2010 to serve Japanese people.
In 1999, a six-month short-term mission in Osaka, Japan inspired SungJong to become a missionary in Japan. He saw the great need of the Gospel there. As he walked along Japanese streets he could not find Christian churches but see many huge Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. It was shocking for him, because Christian churches could be found everywhere in his own country of Korea. SungJong was burdened that Japanese people should have more opportunities to hear the Gospel. Japanese non believers are in need of being reached by Japanese Christians with the grace of God. Japanese churches should plant many missional churches to increase opportunities for reaching out to their people.
Becoming a friend with a Japanese student at the seminary, Seima Aoyagi, SungJong came to see a more clear vision of mission for Japan. His family has visited Tokyo twice to see mission opportunities. Urgent needs of the Japanese especially include church planting for spreading God's kingdom. His family will join the church planting efforts in downtown Tokyo (Grace City Church Tokyo). That experience will equip them to plant new churches in the Tokyo metro area.
