Mark was born in London to English parents, so naturally, London has been his centre of gravity ever since. But perhaps because some of his childhood was spent in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he has always had a curiosity about and love for the wider world. He studied at Oxford University from 1989-1993 (where he did Classics and Theology for two years each), trained for Anglican ministry at Ridley Hall Cambridge (1995-1997), and did a DMin at Covenant Seminary from 2019-2022 in cultural apologetics.
Ordained in the Church of England in 1997, he has served on church staffs in Oxford, Sheffield and from 2005-2014 at All Souls, Langham Place, in London. He taught Biblical Studies at Kampala Evangelical School of Theology in Uganda from 2001-2005, during which time he began his involvement with Langham Partnership. Since then he has worked for them in various capacities, becoming Director (Europe & Caribbean) for Langham Preaching for the period 2014-2024. He is now freelance to enable him to write and teach more (he has written 10 books and hopes to write many more!). He is currently involved in 3 different podcast projects, and is passionate about engaging the Bible deeply with the realities of our current cultural moment. To that end he is very concerned to engage with the Arts in general (the focus of his DMin).
He is married to Rachel, a church worker in a church just west of London, and they have two adult children. Having been spread very thinly over many places when working with Langham, he now tries to focus on fewer, with particular concern for Ukraine and Turkey.
